You are a kind soul, doing what you do for the ferals. I hope you are not too upset by brash young things who think they can dish out advice when they really do not know enough of the circumstances. We had an overweight kitty, JB, who was slender, lithesome, strong and never sick one day in her life for the first 10 years of her life. Then suddenly, she started adding on pounds without eating more. The vets couldn't find anything wrong with her, and thought it was hormonal. Her food intake was closely controlled, but still her weight escalated. We got a lot of comments about us killing her by overfeeding and so on. Sigh. Her story is told here ...

Well, he needs that fat.  He was abandoned, and is feral, and is relatively new around here.  I am trying to keep him well fed as best I can tho.

He doesn't need that much fat, he isn't a bear to store for winter months. Sp much fat isn't good for a cat or dog. Can he fit between fence, climb, run?
Cats eat many times per day in small portions but if you give them something tasty like meat they will eat more than they need plus cats and dogs both like to beg for food even though they are not even hungry. It is best for a cat to have dry food available in a bowl always so she can take it when she wants, that also allows her to eat in many small portions like cats like to. Give him meat and other fresh food occasionally, like a treat, not every day also and only once a day for one meal. Every 3 or four days give such treats not everyday. Plus if cat is in the open she will hunt insects, birds and mice and eat that too if she wants. That is how I feed my cat and  my vet said she has a very nice structure, not too fat, no too skinny. I also read few books about cats in general, nutrition and health.

Thanks for your input.  I have three indoor cats.  One is 16, 13 and 5.  I am very familiar with their needs and have alot of experience with the cats.
I have also had cats in my lifetime that where heavy, even tho they did not eat anymore than the others.   This cat, however, is not overfed.  My point is, he has been living outdoors apparently, and is heavy.  Just lot people, some are big boned.

Indoor cats are even more likely to get fat since they are not moving so much, they eat and sleep mostly, spending time always in same rooms.  Cat's eating habits depend on how you rise them also. From young cats should be used to dry and many types of fresh food. That cat could definitively not fit between the fence but you cannot check even if they can in the house the whole time and no animal is made to live between four walls. Except goldfish probably.
I have a fourth cat now, she is 4, first one died of sickness at 14, two others had accidents outside while young. Moving outdoors is dangerous for a cat always but still I do not regret anything. A cat that is once allowed to go outside chooses herself to go outside, no animal would choose living in 4 walls on her own free will.

The most important things are love and compassion. I'm confident that I did something's right since my cats have reached ripe old ages, and God willing more years ahead. In addition, giving feral cats shelter and food is a good thing and for some people, that's most they can do based on their circumstances and more than those who leave these poor animals out in the cold. So, a little extra food never hurts a feral cat. Nuff said :)

It is better for anybody to be fat than to be hungry but I wouldn't agree that ripe years is a criteria for anything. You can live 100 years and still feel it was a miserable life. It is like saying a tiger living in a zoo 20 years is more happy than a tiger that lived in wild for 5 years. You think the tiger from wilds would rather live in zoo or a circus than free in wilds? That a human that has been a slave for 100 years is happier than a human who reached 30 years and died as a free man? I would rather live 20 years the way I choose to live than 100 under somebody who decides how my life needs to look like.
